area. Use this guide to satisfy your taste buds when either visiting or living
in Denver.
Banzai Restaurant
6655 Leetsdale Dr
Denver, CO 80224
303-329-3366
Description: The chefs at Banzai are passionate about their craft, and
the result is notable creations that draw sushi connoisseurs in droves.
Located in the triangle of Glendale, Aurora and Cook Park, the
neighborhood pioneer's decor is modern and clean with well-appointed
tables and a welcoming bar area. The rolls range from tempura-battered
to avocado-jacketed, and all are equally satisfying.
Vesta Dipping Grill
1822 Blake Street
Denver, CO 80202
303-296-1970
Description: Vesta is consistently named one of Denver's top restaurants
by 5280 magazine, called one of "America's Best" by the venerable Zagat
survey and has been lauded by Travel & Leisure and the Wall Street
Journal. It's easy to see why Vesta garners such accolades: Blending
sophistication with funky cool, the dining room is a mix of wood and
wrought iron with accents of sultry red and brown. And though many bill
it as a fondue restaurant, the ultra-modern spot wouldn't be caught dead
serving up the gloppy cheeses of the fondue past. Rather, Vesta allows
diners to pair skewers of meats and vegetables with a choice of 30
dipping sauces, each prepared with a light hand and lots of flavor.
Pete's Kitchen
1962 E. Colfax Ave.
Denver, CO 80206
303-321-3139
Description: Serving comfort food that is darned greasy and downright
perfect, Pete's is a late-night staple for filling grub that cures the
nocturnal munchies. Top-notch diner food is served all day and
throughout the night to regulars spanning several generations. Loyal
patrons recognize the same customers frequenting the joint weekly, and
first-timers begin an infatuation that can last a lifetime.
CityGrille
321 E Colfax Ave
Denver, CO 80203
303-861-0726
Description: The papers, the Gabby Gourmet and just about everyone else
has given CityGrille a nod for best power lunch, best burger, best green
chili and best fill-in-the-blank for just about everything else the
eatery serves. Open since 1998, CityGrille is a stone's throw from the
capitol, making it convenient with a capital "C" -- no pun intended. The
only mystery at the grill is why this place isn't jam-packed every night
of the week. It's as if CityGrille is a secret that everyone knows about
but is loath to give away.
Mercury Café
2199 California St
Denver, CO 80205
303-294-9281
Description: Inside the walls of the infamous Merc you find just about
everything you need to add some spice to your life. This place has been
a favorite hangout for local artists, poets, playwrights and musicians
for as long as we can remember. The menu is an eclectic mix of
vegetarian and meaty combinations; they serve breakfast on the weekends
and appetizers, supper and desserts at nightly.
Carmine's On Penn
92 S Pennsylvania St
Denver, CO 80209
303-777-6443
Description: Family-style Italian dining draws urban crowds to this
well-known Washington Park restaurant. Nestled between rows of homes,
Carmine's brings a delightful atmosphere filled with a casual and social
feel. The sense of friendly neighborhood ambiance is palpable both in
the intimate dining area or the patio, an ideal people-watching spot.
Large groups are welcome in the Blue Room, perfect for parties or
receptions. The vibe of the staff fully reflects the sociable character
of Carmine's.
El Taco de Mexico
714 Santa Fe Dr
Denver, CO 80204
303-623-3926
Description: There is nothing fancy about El Taco, no live entertainment
or showy Mexican decor. But then frills aren't needed when a place is
always packed with folks out for a real and satisfying bite of true
Mexican food for a reasonable price. The kitchen is open to view and
patrons can watch the staff preparing the tacos and burritos the eatery
is famed for. Favorites include tacos, the chile relleno burrito
smothered in spicy green chili and shredded fried pork carnitas, all
made with fresh ingredients like cilantro and red chili.
Anthony's Pizza & Pasta
10890 E Dartmouth Ave
Denver, CO 80014
303-306-9755
Description: Partisans of pizza palaces may debate over which crust
(thick or thin?) is the best in the Mile High City, but college kids,
New York transplants and families forging for reasonably-priced pizzas
all swear by these no-frills pie shacks. There are 11 scattered
throughout metro Denver, all proffering up a trio of grabby choices --
white, Neapolitan, and Sicilian. Don't come expecting gourmet toppings:
It's all about the usual suspects here, such as pepperoni, sausage,
Canadian bacon, lots of mozzarella, and standard vegetable options.
McCormick's Fish House & Bar
1659 Wazee St
Denver, CO 80202
303-825-1107
Description: One of the longest-lived eateries in the ever- changing
LoDo restaurant scene, McCormick's has persevered with a triple-threat
of assets. For starters there's the namesake dining room, where
white-shirted servers deliver good old-fashioned service and some of the
best seafood in Denver. Fresh fish and shellfish are airlifted in daily,
the menu includes steamed, broiled and fried swimmers from points north,
south, east and west.
Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House
8100 E Orchard Road
Greenwood Village, CO 80111

Description: This A-list bistro caters to a chic and sexy crowd of young
urbanites, sports stars and business folk with fat expense accounts and
important clients to schmooze. The interior is intimate with soft
lighting and dark wood. The servers are as professional, polished and
there to anticipate your every need. Featuring bona fide prime beef, the
meat is aged to perfection, hand cut and then perfectly prepared and
served to enthusiastic reviews.
